ProtonVPN is a privacy focused Swiss VPN from the makers of Proton Mail that helps users browse, stream and work privately from anywhere. In this ProtonVPN review by IdealOnlineBusiness.com, we look at its pricing, real user feedback, standout features and how it stacks up against NordVPN, ExpressVPN and other alternatives.
Our analysis of ProtonVPN reviews shows the platform is widely trusted for privacy, transparency and value. It has public reviews across the major review sites, but we have not independently verified a current aggregate score and so do not quote one. Customers consistently call out the open source apps, audited no log policy and the world-class free tier.
Proton VPN’s no-logs policy is audited annually by independent security firm Securitum, and the company operates under Switzerland’s strict privacy laws outside 14 Eyes jurisdictions. Every server runs on full-disk-encrypted diskless hardware, so there is nothing to subpoena.
Secure Core routes your traffic through a second Proton-owned server in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden before exiting to the public internet. Even if an exit server is compromised, an adversary only sees traffic from the Secure Core node, not your real IP.
NetShield blocks known ad servers, tracker domains and malware hosts at the DNS level for every device on your account. Pages load faster with fewer tracking pixels, and it works on mobile apps that can’t run a browser extension.
The Proton VPN free plan is unlimited — no data cap, no bandwidth throttle, no ads — across servers in the US, Netherlands, Japan and Romania. It is the only reputable free VPN large enough to use daily without pushing you to a paid upgrade.
Every Proton VPN server allows P2P file sharing, and dedicated Tor-over-VPN servers route your connection into the Tor network automatically. Journalists and researchers get an extra layer of anonymity without installing the Tor browser.
Proton ships native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV and routers, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. One account covers up to 10 simultaneous devices on the Plus tier.
Protocol options include WireGuard for speed, OpenVPN for stability and Stealth (an obfuscated WireGuard variant) to bypass aggressive firewalls in restricted regions. Stealth disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, which helps on hotel, school and airport networks.
Every Proton VPN client is fully open-source on GitHub and has been code-audited by third parties like SEC Consult. You can verify the apps or build them yourself — a level of transparency most paid VPNs still don’t offer.
ProtonVPN packages everything privacy-conscious users need into beautifully designed apps and a fair price.
What sets ProtonVPN apart from competitors like NordVPN and ExpressVPN is the strong transparency record and the open source codebase that anyone can audit.

Proton VPN sells a generous free tier plus three commitment-length paid plans, with two-year subscriptions offering the deepest discount (up to 70% off). Free and paid plans share the same Swiss-based zero-logs infrastructure.
All paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. Proton accepts credit cards, PayPal, Bitcoin/cryptocurrency, and even cash for anonymous signups. Business plans and family plans (up to 6 users) are also available with custom pricing.
Across Trustpilot and the major app stores, ProtonVPN earns consistently positive reviews (we have not verified a current aggregate score, so we do not quote one) from thousands of verified users. Reviewers highlight transparency and the privacy stance.
